Dr. Le May was educated at the Royal College of Science & Technology, Glasgow, and the University of Glasgow, Scotland. Following a short period in the design office at the North British Locomotive Company, he was on the research and teaching staff of the University of Glasgow from 1957 to 1963 and was awarded a Ph. D. in 1963 for research on the behaviour of material at high temperature. He was on the faculty of the University of Saskatchewan from 1963 to 1985, holding the position of Professor of Mechanical Engineering from 1970 to 1985.
He established Metallurgical Consulting Services Ltd. in 1978. He also founded MCS Associates, Inc., based in the Pittsburgh area, in 1991. He has more than 250 publications including several books and has written widely on the mechanical behaviour of materials.
Dr. Le May continues to serve as an adjunct professor in the post-graduate program of the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ), Brazil. Dr. Le May is a registered Professional Engineer in the provinces of Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador.
He has consulted for many companies and agencies in Canada, USA, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, South Africa, Singapore and other countries. He has appeared as an expert witness in product liability and related cases on many occasions.
Dr. Le May is a Fellow of ASM International (FASM), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (FASME) and the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA); is a past president of the International Metallographic Society (IMS) and serves on a number of other international committees.
